Drift Trikes
The Big Wheel is a type of tricycle introduced by Louis Marx and Company in 1969. This toy usually made of plastic, with an oversized front wheel, that rides very low to the ground was very popular in the 1970’s in the United States, partly because of its low cost and partly because consumer groups said it was a safer alternative to the tradiciontal tricycle or bicycle.
Nowadays a new hobby involving the Big Wheel is becoming very popular around the world, it’s the Drift Trike. Created in the United States, this new hobby consist basically in downhill a road doing drift with modified Big Wheels. For who that don’t know what is Drift, this is a driving technique and a motorsport where the driver intentionally over steers, causing loss of traction in the rear wheels through turns, while maintaining vehicle control and a high exit speed. A car is drifting when the rear slip angle is greater than the front slip angle prior to the corner apex, and the front wheels are pointing in the opposite direction to the turn (e.g. car is turning left, wheels are pointed right or vice versa), and the driver is controlling these factors.
But now this “new toys” cannot be used by children, in a downhill the Drift Triker reach around 60 or 80 Km per hour. The modified Big Wheel has a BMX front with two plastic wheels in the rear to cause loss of traction. To get one, you can build yours, taking a BMX front and creating the back of the tricycle (There is a lot of places on the internet where you can search for instructions to build yours), or you can buy one, the price is about 298,333 dollars. The most of people who practice the drift trike wants only to have fun, but this hobby is becoming a extreme sport with championships all over the world.
